It’s funny how you never really notice how many happy people there are in the world until you can’t stand the sight of them. They were everywhere around me—at the grocers, in the bank. At work.

Apparently Allie, the one person I could always count on for a caustic remark, was in love for the first time ever. After listening to her gush on about the love of her life, I decided it was time to put myself in a week-long, self-imposed exile away from all the happy people of the world.

I locked myself away in my apartment with only Max for company. He understood my need. Together we lounged around the apartment with me in the faded T-shirt I’d slept in before Tyler came into my life, watching WWF on television—because the only alternative was soap operas and Court TV and even those were filled with happy people. I ignored Steph, Allie and even Aunt Trudy. After my week in exile was up, I emerged from my safe haven angry, sarcastic and defiant.

Screw Tyler Bennedict for making me depressed. I’d done the right thing in getting rid of him. I mean, I barely recognized the woman I’d become when I was with him. This wasn’t me. I was usually so in-control of my emotions. Since meeting Tyler, I’d gone from a fairly in-charge woman to a weeping, mindless fool, to an obsessive baker, to the granddaddy of them all, paranoid recluse! I’d run the gamut of emotions.

I’d ignored my aunt, ignored Trudy, Max, my friends and myself. I’d lied to those who actually loved me for a man whose future with me had been questionable from the start. And the worst part was that I’d known better. I’d been warned. Steph had tried to tell me Tyler would make David look like a choirboy, and she’d been right.

I’d given away more to Tyler than I had with David or any other man before him—pieces of myself I could never get back again, like my secret passions, my family obligations. It was time I got the woman I’d been before Tyler back under control. The first item on my agenda was to call Steph and apologize for being such a lousy friend to her lately.

“Carrie? Oh, my God I was almost ready to call the cops! I thought maybe you’d been kidnapped, but then I called Hazel and she told me she’d heard you talking to Max, so I figured you just needed time. Are you okay?”

“I’m fine. I just needed to figure out some stuff in my head. Do you want to have lunch today?” Okay, this came out sounding way too perky for me. I needed to tone it down before Steph ended up calling a therapist. “I mean, if you have time. I thought I’d go over to the shop later today—you know, check on things—but I’d love to see you first.”

After a lengthy moment of silence, Steph agreed. “Of course. That would be great. I’ll see you at one.
